About Butet saddles

Butet saddles are renowned for balance, close contact and elegant French leatherwork. The minimalist blocks and refined flaps let you ride in harmony with your horse—stable over fences and precise on the flat.

Calfskin vs grain leather

Full calfskin gives instant grip and a supple, “moulds-to-you” feel; grain (or mixed) leather is a touch firmer and more hard-wearing. Many riders choose calf on the seat/knee with grain on high-wear panels for longevity without losing feel.

Tree, balance and panels

A well-balanced tree and thoughtfully shaped panels help distribute pressure and keep the saddle quiet through changes of pace and stride. Panel options and widths allow you to match shoulder freedom, wither clearance and back shape.

Fit and size guidance

Seat size supports your pelvis; flap length/forwardness matches femur length and jumping style. On the horse, aim for even contact, wither clearance and a centred balance point. When in doubt, ask us for sizing help or a fitting consultation.

Care and break-in

After each ride, wipe sweat and dust away. Clean with mild saddle soap and condition sparingly; avoid over-oiling. Let the saddle dry naturally and store on a supportive rack. Calfskin softens quickly—expect a short break-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What Butet saddles do you stock?

We carry the Butet saddle range across the core seat profiles: Flat (close-contact, classical position), Semi-Flat (slightly more support without going to a deep seat), Semi-Deep (security over fences with an open knee block), and Deep (most security with deeper knee and thigh blocks). Each can be built to your specification in calfskin or grain leather.

Are you an authorised Butet dealer in Ireland?

Yes. Equijump Ltd. is the official Irish distributor for Butet. Saddles ship direct from the Saumur workshop with full manufacturer warranty, and we handle sizing, fittings, warranty claims and aftercare locally.

How do I choose the right Butet saddle for me?

The Flat seat suits riders who prefer a classical close-contact feel and ride hunters or equitation. The Semi-Flat adds a touch of support without going to a deep seat. The Semi-Deep is the most-ordered pattern for jumping riders who want security over fences without the depth of the full Deep. The Deep is for riders who want maximum security and a forward block configuration. Send us your rider measurements and we'll shortlist.

How do I size or fit a Butet saddle to my horse?

Match seat size to your hip and pelvic support, and flap length and forwardness to your femur and jumping style. Tree width and panel configuration depend on your horse's back. Send rider measurements (height, inside leg, weight) and side/back photos of your horse and we'll narrow the spec; where a hands-on fitting is needed we work alongside your saddle fitter or arrange one with a Butet-trained fitter in Ireland.

What is the difference between calfskin and grain leather on a Butet saddle?

Calfskin is softer and grippier from day one; grain leather is firmer and more durable in harder wear. Many riders choose a calf seat and knees with grain panels for the best of both. Calfskin sits at the top of the price range and grain at the entry. Both are full Butet leathers from the Saumur workshop.

How should I care for a Butet saddle?

Wipe down after every ride. Clean weekly with a mild saddle soap and condition sparingly with a quality leather balm - calfskin in particular doesn't want heavy oiling. Avoid direct heat and sunlight, and store on a supportive rack to preserve the shape.

Do you sell pre-owned Butet saddles?

Yes. We hold a rotating stock of pre-owned Butet saddles in our used saddles collection, each inspected for tree integrity, stitching and leather condition before listing.
