Horse Bits

More than a hundred bits published for the UK, the deepest page on the site. Most are from Trust, the Dutch bitmaker: the Inno Sense line with its flexible synthetic mouthpieces, and the Sweet Iron range beside it. Poponcini's Harmony bits and Winderen fill out the rest. If the horse is fussy in the contact, the answer is probably somewhere in this hundred - and it is 1 to 2 working days away.

The Trust ranges, in depth

Most of these bits are Trust, and that is deliberate: the Inno Sense flexible synthetic mouthpiece is available across an eggbutt, a dee, a baby pelham, a kimblewick and a hackamore combi, so the same mouthpiece idea can follow a horse through changes of cheekpiece. The Sweet Iron range covers the traditional metal options. Around Trust sit Poponcini's Harmony bits and Winderen.

Read this before buying a mouthpiece

Bits are hygiene-sensitive, so once a bit has been opened it cannot come back. Check your sizes against the bit the horse goes in now before ordering - width and cheek type especially. Unopened bits in original condition return under the normal 30-day window for a full refund; you cover the return postage on a change of mind.

From Ireland, duties settled

The whole page ships from Ireland. UK VAT and any import duty are settled at checkout - no charge on delivery. Mainland Britain: DHL Express, 1 to 2 working days. In-stock orders placed before midday Irish time on a weekday usually ship the same day, which matters when the new bit needs a few schooling sessions before the weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What bit brands do you stock?

The main bits collection carries Trust Equestrian (the Inno Sense flexible synthetic, sweet iron and leather lines) and Poponcini (Italian classic stainless). For specialist patterns from Sprenger, Metalab, Nathe and Lami-Cell, see our separate specialised bits collection.

How do I choose the right bit for my horse?

Start with mouthpiece (single-jointed, double-jointed, mullen, ported), material (stainless, sweet iron, leather, flexible synthetic), and cheek pattern (loose ring, eggbutt, D-ring, full cheek, hanging cheek, Pelham, gag). Most horses do well in a snaffle in their preferred material. Move to a Pelham or gag only if you genuinely need more brakes than a snaffle offers. Tell us your horse's mouth width, current bit and what you're working on and we'll shortlist.

What is the difference between Inno Sense, sweet iron and leather Trust bits?

All three are full Trust Equestrian bit lines from the Netherlands and they target different responses. Inno Sense uses a flexible FDA-approved synthetic mouthpiece around a stainless steel core - warmer and softer than metal, used for sensitive horses and young horses. Sweet iron develops a natural rust-like patina that encourages chewing and salivation through taste - don't polish the patina off. Leather wraps a stainless core in saddlery leather for the gentlest possible mouthpiece - typically used for horses returning to work after lay-off or in contact retraining.

How do I size a bit correctly?

Measure the width of your horse's mouth at the corners using a piece of string or a dedicated bit-measure tool. Pick a bit that sits with about 5mm clear on each side - not pinching the corners, not loose enough to slide. Most bits come in 1cm increments. Mouthpiece thickness is a separate variable: thinner mouthpieces (10mm-14mm) feel more direct, thicker ones (16mm-20mm) spread pressure over a larger area.

Do you stock pony bits and specialised bits?

Yes - Trust Equestrian and Poponcini both make Baby Pelhams, smaller-diameter snaffles and shorter cheek patterns suitable for ponies. For specialised bits including Sprenger KK Ultra, Metalab Bernard Fonck and Pessoa Magic System, Nathe flexible mullen mouth bits, and Lami-Cell hackamores, see our specialised bits collection.

How should I clean and care for a bit?

Rinse in warm water after every ride to clear saliva and feed. Stainless steel needs nothing more. Sweet iron should be rinsed but not polished - the patina is intentional. Synthetic mouthpieces (Inno Sense, Nathe) clean with a soft brush; avoid abrasive scourers. Leather mouthpieces should be dried thoroughly before hanging up and conditioned occasionally with a leather balm. Inspect rings, joints and mouthpieces regularly for wear.
