The Kentucky range covers everyday yard headcollars through to grooming and presentation halters.

Most headcollars come in pony, cob, full and oversize. The headcollar should sit two fingers below the cheekbone, with about a hand's width of clearance under the throat strap. If your horse falls between sizes or has an unusual head shape, send us a measurement of the noseband-to-throat distance and we'll advise.

Leather headcollars are the traditional choice - durable, smart, and what you'd choose for showing and presentation. Nylon web headcollars are the everyday yard standard - hard-wearing, machine-washable, and cheaper to replace if damaged. Rope halters give more direct contact for in-hand work and groundwork, with knots placed at pressure points. Each material suits different jobs.

Yes - for safety. A headcollar should fail before the horse can hurt itself if it pulls back or gets caught up. Leather headcollars naturally break under significant force; nylon should have a leather safety crown or a breakaway buckle. Avoid thick nylon headcollars without a breakaway - they can hold a panicking horse against a fixed point with serious injury risk.

Wipe down after use to clear sweat and mud. Clean weekly with a mild saddle soap and condition sparingly with a quality leather balm - the CWD and Butet Akene ranges work well on leather headcollars too. Inspect the buckles and stitching regularly; replace before wear becomes failure.
