Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hoof boot?

A hoof boot (also called an overreach boot or bell boot) is a rubber or synthetic boot that wraps around the horse's pastern and covers the back of the front hoof. It protects the heel bulb from hind-leg strikes during work. The term "hoof boot" is sometimes also used for hoof protection used as an alternative to shoes - if that's what you're after, contact us as those are different products.

When should I use hoof boots on my horse?

Use hoof boots on horses that overreach (clip the back of the front foot with the hind shoe) during fast or jumping work, and as a precaution in cross-country and showjumping. Some horses wear them during turnout to prevent pulling shoes.

How do I size a hoof boot?

Most overreach hoof boots come in pony, cob, full and oversize. The boot should clear the ground when the horse stands square. Pull-on rubber boots stretch to fit; Velcro-fastened boots adjust precisely.

What is the difference between a hoof boot and a tendon boot?

A hoof (overreach) boot covers the back of the front hoof to prevent heel strike. A tendon boot covers the front cannon and tendons to protect against hind-leg strikes during jumping. Both protect different parts of the front leg from different impacts.

What hoof boot brands do you stock?

Kentucky Horsewear (sheepskin leather, leather, Air Tech overreach patterns) and One Equestrian Hoof Bands Rubber. See boots and bandages for the broader protective boot range.

How do I care for hoof boots?

Hose off mud after use. Most rubber and synthetic hoof boots are machine-washable cool. Leather overreach boots wipe clean and condition occasionally. Inspect the inner lining and the hook-and-loop fastening regularly.
