Wipe down after every ride with a damp cloth. Clean with mild saddle soap once a week and condition sparingly with a quality leather balm - the CWD and Butet Akene ranges are matched to those brands' leathers. Avoid heavy oiling and direct sunlight, and store on supportive racks or hangers in a cool, dry place.

Full-grain leather (the outermost layer of the hide, with the natural grain intact) is the most durable - it ages and develops character with use. Calfskin is softer and grippier from new but slightly more fragile if mistreated. Most high-end saddle brands offer both options, with calfskin used for seats and grain for panels and high-wear surfaces.

Use balm. Oil can soften leather too aggressively, leaving it limp and reducing its working life. A quality leather balm (CWD Conditioner, Butet Akene Cream) gives moisture and softening without going too far. Apply sparingly - a thin coat worked in with a soft cloth is plenty, and always buff off the excess.

Wipe after every ride. Clean weekly. Condition lightly every few weeks. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Inspect buckles, holes and stitching regularly and address wear before it becomes failure. Quality leather tack, cared for properly, lasts decades; tack that's neglected fails in years.
