In Ireland, if you hold a standard Category B (car) licence, you're legally allowed to drive a horsebox with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg. These are the most popular choice for private owners as they usually accommodate 1–2 horses comfortably. Anything heavier will require a Category C1 or C (HGV) licence.
A standard 3.5-tonne horsebox usually has an unladen weight between 2,400kg and 2,800kg, depending on the build and features. This gives you a usable payload of roughly 700–1,000kg, which needs to account for your horses, tack, water, fuel, and any passengers. It's important not to exceed this, as overloading is illegal and unsafe.
Irish and EU animal transport regulations recommend that horses should not be transported for more than 8 hours without rest. For journeys over 4 hours, it’s advised to stop for water and welfare checks. Some competition horses can handle longer journeys, but breaks every 3–4 hours are essential for hydration, comfort, and ventilation.
In Ireland, horseboxes can be financed via hire purchase agreements, personal loans, or dealer-arranged finance through lenders like AIB Finance, Bluestone, or First Citizen. Terms typically range from 12 to 60 months, and you’ll usually need a deposit of 10–20%. At Equijump Ltd, we also offer our own finance option through Finance Ireland, with no deposit required. Many dealers now provide online calculators or quick approval tools for added convenience.
The right size depends on your horses’ height, number, and temperament. A 3.5T box suits up to 2 horses around 16.2–17.2hh. For larger horses, multiple animals, or more room for gear and living space, consider a 5T or 7.5T lorry, which often includes onboard sleeping and tack storage areas. Always consider the payload and space, not just weight.
Yes. A Category B (car) licence is all you need to drive any vehicle up to 3,500kg MAM, including most modern 2-horse transporters. However, if you're looking at heavier lorries (e.g., 5T or 7.5T), you'll need a Category C1 licence, and for anything over 7.5T, a full Category C (rigid truck) licence is legally required.
For safe travel in Irish conditions, key features include stallion partitions, anti-slip rubber flooring, internal and reversing cameras, ventilation windows, and a strong bulkhead between the cab and horse area. Every THEAULT vehicle is crash-tested and certified by C-Tech, ensuring the highest standards of safety and structural integrity. Additional touches like LED lighting, emergency exits, and insulated panels provide outstanding safety and comfort for both horses and riders.
A designated tack and changing space provides secure storage for saddles, bridles, and clothing while keeping the horse area clean and uncluttered. It also offers shelter and privacy at events, especially during wet Irish weather. In larger models, this area may include bench seating, coat hooks, saddle racks, or even a small vanity unit.
Every THEAULT vehicle is built on a Renault Red platform, providing 24-hour recovery service anywhere in Europe.
THEAULT’s main factory is located in France, with repair and service partners available across every EU country.
All THEAULT horsetrucks come with a 3-year bodwork warranty, with the option to extend coverage up to 5 years for additional peace of mind. For the chassis warranty, the warranty depends on what the manufacturer offers.
