Description

A hackamore combi with short shanks and a sweet iron mouthpiece, from Trust Equestrian. It shares the action between the mouth and the nose, so communication can be tuned to the horse.

The cheekpiece - hackamore combi short

Combines a hackamore with a mouthpiece, so the action is shared between the mouth, the nose and the chin (via the curb chain). The short shanks give a milder leverage than the long version. The adjustment screw above the mouthpiece lets you set how much of the action goes onto the nose. Often chosen for keen or strong horses on a jumping or cross-country course, and horses that respond better to the nose than to the mouth alone. Fit the noseband and curb strap correctly, and ride with a quiet, independent hand. For a softer feel on the nose, the noseband can be padded with fleece or Vetrap.

The material - sweet iron

Sweet iron oxidises on contact with saliva. The surface takes on a slightly sweet taste, which encourages the horse to salivate and helps release the jaw. The bit starts out blue and turns brownish-grey with use - this is normal and part of how the material works. A bit left unused can develop a light orange surface rust; wipe it off with a damp cloth. Clean after riding and store dry.

Choosing a mouthpiece

Elliptical (double-jointed) - anatomically shaped with two joints that follow the contours of the mouth. Pressure is spread evenly over the tongue, lips and bars for a stable, comfortable feel without losing clarity. On horses with a very narrow lower jaw, check the fit so the joints have room.

Jointed (single-jointed) - one joint, acting mainly on the bars and the sides of the tongue. A clear, direct aid for horses that can get strong, that go less well with pressure on the centre of the tongue, or that go less well in a double-jointed bit. Because the action is direct, a steady hand matters.

About Trust Equestrian

Trust Equestrian is a Dutch equestrian house based in Oisterwijk, run by brothers Teun and Bas van Riel. The brand makes both bits and leatherwork, with everything handcrafted in the Netherlands - bits welded and polished by hand, bridles cut and stitched from European full-grain leather.
