Frequently Asked Questions

What is a grackle bridle?

A grackle bridle uses a figure-8 noseband (also called a grackle or Mexican noseband) - two crossed straps that sit above and below the bit, forming an X over the bridge of the nose. The figure-8 design discourages the horse from crossing its jaw or opening its mouth wide, while leaving more room for breathing than a traditional cavesson. Common in show jumping, eventing and cross-country.

When should I choose a grackle bridle?

Use a grackle for horses that cross their jaw over fences or in faster work, horses that need more nose pressure to discourage mouth-opening, or as a default choice for show jumping where the figure-8 is the traditional pattern. Don't substitute for a flash on a horse that doesn't need it - grackle action is more direct than flash.

How do I size a grackle bridle?

Standard bridle sizing - pony, cob, full, oversize. The figure-8 should sit with the crossover point centred over the nasal bone, and the lower strap above (not below) the bit. If the horse has an unusually long or short head, contact us before ordering.

What is the difference between a grackle and other bridle types?

A grackle uses a crossed figure-8 noseband. A flash adds a small lower strap to a standard cavesson (less aggressive than a grackle). A drop noseband sits below the bit. A combined noseband mixes elements. Each addresses different evasions; tell us your horse and we'll point you at the right pattern.

What grackle bridle brands do you stock?

CWD Anatomic Figure of 8 Noseband Snaffle Bridle, Raised Figure 8 Noseband Bridle, plus separate Raised Figure 8 Nosebands. Dyon Working Collection Figure 8 Noseband Bridle, New English Collection Grackle Bridle, plus separate Figure 8 Noseband. See bridles for the full bridle range.

How do I care for a grackle bridle?

Wipe down after every ride. Clean weekly with mild saddle soap and condition sparingly. Inspect the crossover stitching regularly - the X point of the figure-8 takes more friction than a standard cavesson.
