Frequently Asked Questions

What is a snaffle bridle?

A snaffle bridle is a bridle designed for use with a snaffle bit and a single rein. The standard pattern - cavesson noseband, browband, headpiece, cheekpieces, and rein attachments - is the everyday English bridle for flatwork, jumping, hunters, and most schooling. Distinct from double bridles (which use two bits) and curb-fitted bridles (Pelham bridles, Western bridles).

When should I choose a snaffle bridle?

Use a snaffle bridle for everyday riding across most disciplines. Most horses ride in a snaffle bridle at all stages of work; only specific advanced applications (Prix St Georges dressage, certain hunting and showing classes) require double bridles or other configurations.

How do I size a snaffle bridle?

Standard sizing - pony fits 12hh-14.2hh, cob fits 14.2hh-15.2hh, full fits 15.2hh and above, with oversize for larger horses. Different brands fit slightly differently - Dyon sizing tends to fit close, CWD tends to fit slightly more generously.

What is the difference between a snaffle bridle and a double bridle?

A snaffle bridle uses one bit and one rein. A double bridle uses two bits (a small snaffle called a bradoon and a curb called a Weymouth) on two reins, providing more refined independent control. Snaffle bridles are everyday; double bridles are for advanced dressage and specific competition contexts.

What snaffle bridle brands do you stock?

CWD Anatomic and Raised French Noseband patterns. Dyon Anatomic Flash, New English Collection Flash, and Working Collection patterns. See bridles for the full range across CWD, Butet, Dyon and Trust Equestrian.

How do I care for a snaffle bridle?

Wipe down after every ride. Clean weekly with mild saddle soap and condition sparingly with a quality leather balm. Store unbuckled on a bridle rack in a cool, dry place.
