Biomechanics Basics: How Your Position Influences Your Horse’s Way of Going

Small changes in your position can make a big difference to the way your horse moves.

Rider biomechanics is simply the way your body moves, balances and communicates in the saddle. Because horse and rider move together as one system, even small changes in your posture, balance or timing can influence your horse’s rhythm, straightness, impulsion and contact.

The good news? Improving your biomechanics does not mean completely changing the way you ride. Often, a few small adjustments can make you feel more secure in the saddle while allowing your horse to move more freely underneath you. Here are some of the key areas to focus on.

Start With Balance

A balanced rider makes it easier for the horse to stay balanced too.

Ideally, your head, ribcage and pelvis should sit naturally above one another, with your weight distributed evenly through both seat bones and your lower leg resting quietly underneath you.

When you are balanced over your horse’s centre of gravity, you are less likely to interfere with their movement and they have a better opportunity to lift through the back, engage the hindquarters and move forward freely.

A quick check at halt

Before you start riding, ask yourself:

  • Can I feel both seat bones evenly in the saddle?
  • Is my ribcage positioned over my pelvis rather than tipping forwards or backwards
  • Are my thighs relaxed and my knees soft?
  • Does my heel sit naturally underneath my hip?
  • Can I breathe comfortably into my ribs and back?

If something feels uneven, start by adjusting your pelvis rather than trying to force the rest of your body into position.

Your Pelvis Sets the Foundation

Think of your pelvis as the central control point of your position. It affects the angle of your spine, your balance and how clearly your aids are communicated. 

A neutral pelvis allows your seat bones to point down into the saddle while keeping your lower back relaxed and long. This position tends to make it easier to follow the horse’s movement.

At the other extremes, riders commonly fall into one of two positions:

Tucked pelvis or “chair seat” 
Your seat moves behind you and your lower leg often comes forward. This can encourage you to drive with the seat and may make it harder for the horse to stay light and balanced.

Perched or “fork seat”
Your upper body tips forward and your weight moves towards the front of the pelvis. This can make the rider less stable and may restrict the horse’s back and stride.

Try this

At walk, gently rock your pelvis between slightly tucked and slightly tipped forward. Keep the movement very small. Then find the comfortable middle point where your seat feels centred and relaxed. That is your neutral position.

Core Strength Without Stiffness

A strong core does not mean holding your stomach rigid.

Instead, think of your core as providing elastic support. It should stabilise your body while still allowing your hips and pelvis to move with the horse. Too much tension can block the horse’s movement, while too little support can cause the upper body to collapse or wobble.

One simple test is your rising trot. Can you rise without throwing your upper body forward or relying on your hands for balance? If so, your core is doing much of the work it should be doing.

Helpful exercises off the horse

Exercises such as:

  • Dead bugs
  • Bird dogs
  • Side planks
  • Glute bridges 

Can all help improve stability without creating excessive stiffness.

Your Thigh and Lower Leg Should Stabilise - Not Grip 

Your thigh should rest softly against the saddle rather than gripping tightly. When riders pinch with the knee, the lower leg often becomes unstable and the rider can be pushed out of the saddle.

Instead, allow the thigh to lie long and relaxed while your lower leg hangs naturally underneath your hip. Your heel should drop because your weight travels down through a relaxed leg, not because you are forcing it down.

Common problems

Lower leg too far behind: 
This often causes the upper body to tip forward and can make the rider less
secure.

Lower leg too far forward:
This creates a chair seat and may encourage the rider to push or drive excessively
with the seat.

Try this

Ride in a light two-point position for 4–6 strides before sitting again for 4–6 strides. Repeating this around the arena can help reset your leg underneath you without encouraging gripping.

Quiet Hands Start With Soft Elbows

Good hands are not created by trying to hold them completely still. Your horse’s head, neck and back are constantly moving, which means your arms need to absorb that movement.

Your elbows act like shock absorbers. When they remain soft and close to your sides, your hands can follow the horse naturally while maintaining a consistent connection.

Aim for:

  • Thumbs gently on top
  • Soft wrists
  • Elbows close to your sides
  • A straight line from your elbow through the rein towards the bit 

Hands that become rigid can restrict the neck and contact, while very wide or low hands can make it harder to maintain an effective outside rein.

Try this At walk or trot, lightly hook the little finger of each hand around a neck strap. Rather than holding the strap rigidly, focus on keeping your elbows soft enough to follow the horse’s movement.

Straightness Starts With the Rider

Very few horses, or riders, are perfectly symmetrical. You may naturally sit heavier on one seat bone, carry one shoulder lower or find one rein easier than the other. Your horse often responds to these differences.
A rider sitting heavier to one side may notice the horse:

  • Drifting
  • Falling through one shoulder
  • Finding one bend easier than the other
  • Feeling stronger in one rein 

Look for patterns

Ask yourself:

  • Do I consistently feel heavier in one stirrup?
  • Is one rein much easier than the other?
  • Does my horse always fall through the same shoulder?
  • Do I collapse through one side of my waist in corners? 

Recognising the pattern is often the first step towards correcting it. Exercises such as shoulder-fore, leg-yielding and serpentines can be helpful for improving straightness and encouraging more even contact.

Timing Matters

A good aid is not only about how strongly you apply it. It is also about when you apply it. Learning to ride with the horse’s natural rhythm can make your aids feel much lighter.

In walk

The horse’s barrel swings from side to side as each hind leg moves forward. Feeling this movement can help you time your leg aids more effectively.

In trot

Use the rhythm of the rising trot. Think about allowing the horse forward during the rise while using the sitting phase for subtle rebalancing.

In canter

Rather than holding continuously, use small, well-timed half-halts to rebalance the stride before softening again. The aim is always to communicate clearly without blocking forward movement.

A Simple 15-Minute Biomechanics Session

You do not need an entire schooling session dedicated to your position. Try adding this 15-minute routine into your normal ride.

  1. Walk and breathe - 2 minutes
    Ride large loops on both reins. Relax your hips and focus on breathing into your sides and back.
  2.  Rising trot - 4 minutes
    Change your diagonal every 10 strides. Try to feel which diagonal you are on rather than looking down.
  3. Two-point intervals - 3 minutes
    Ride six strides in two-point, followed by six strides sitting or rising.
  4. Serpentines and leg-yield - 4 minutes
    Ride a large serpentine, adding a few steps of leg-yield before riding straight again.
  5. Straight transitions - 2 minutes
    Ride simple trot–canter–trot transitions, focusing on staying centred and keeping the horse straight.

Don't Forget to Breathe

Breathing is one of the easiest parts of rider biomechanics to overlook. When riders concentrate, they often hold their breath  and tension quickly follows.

Try exhaling during transitions or half-halts. It can help soften your seat, shoulders and hands. Your gaze matters too. Look where you want to go rather than looking down at your horse. 

Your head influences the position of your spine, shoulders and ultimately the rest of your body.

Your Tack Matters Too

Sometimes a position problem is not purely a riding problem. Poorly balanced or incorrectly fitted equipment can make it much harder for a rider to sit correctly.
A few things worth checking include:

Saddle balance

A saddle that tips forwards or backwards may cause the rider to compensate constantly.

Stirrup length

Stirrups that are significantly too long or too short can affect your hip, knee and lower-leg alignment.

Girth and saddle pads

Excessive bulk or unsuitable equipment can alter how the saddle sits and may affect freedom of movement.

If you constantly feel as though you are fighting to stay in position, your tack may be worth reviewing.

Off-Horse Exercises

Improving strength and mobility away from the horse can make a noticeable difference in the saddle. Try incorporating these exercises two or three times per week:

  • Hip mobility: 90/90 hip switches - 2 × 10 each side 
  • Core: Side plank - 3 × 20–30 seconds each side
  • Glutes: Glute bridges - 3 × 12
  • Upper back mobility: Open-book rotations - 2 × 8 each side

Small amounts of consistent work usually make far more difference than occasional intense sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I force my heels down?
No. Your heel should drop naturally through a relaxed ankle. Forcing it down can create tension through the ankle, knee and hip and may actually make your leg less secure.

My horse rushes.  Do I need a stronger bit?
Not necessarily. Before changing equipment, look at the full picture. Check whether you are balanced, whether your hands and elbows are following the movement and whether your half-halts are well timed. Tack fit, dental comfort, training and other physical factors should also be considered if rushing becomes a consistent issue.

Why do I collapse through one hip in corners?
It is often linked to natural asymmetry. Think about growing taller through the side that tends to collapse while keeping your shoulders level and your weight centred over both seat bones.
