Frequently Asked Questions

What lead ropes do you stock?

We carry Kentucky Horsewear (basic rope, leather chain leads, leather-covered chain leads, stallion lead, presentation lead), the Pack Horse Goleygo system (a German-invented quick-release magnetic lead rope), Lami-Cell elastic lead rope, and the Equijump Ltd own-brand leadrope.

How long should a horse lead rope be?

A standard yard lead rope is typically 180cm-220cm long - enough to give the horse some space without trailing dangerously. Travel lead ropes can be shorter; presentation leads (used in the show ring) are usually longer. The Goleygo system uses a fixed adapter pin so the rope length doesn't matter for safety.

What is the difference between rope and leather lead ropes?

Cotton or polyester rope leads are everyday yard standard - hard-wearing, washable, and cheap to replace. Leather chain leads (Kentucky's Leather Chain Lead 270cm, Leather Covered Chain Lead, Stallion Chain) give more control on stallions or horses being shown in-hand. Presentation leads are smarter still for the show ring. Rope is everyday; leather and chain are for specific jobs.

Should a horse lead rope clip break under pressure?

Yes. The clip on a yard lead rope should be a panic-snap or other quick-release that fails before the horse can injure itself if it pulls back. The Goleygo magnetic system releases under sharp pressure by design, which is why it's a safety upgrade over a traditional clip lead. Avoid heavy-duty fixed clips for tying up - they can hold a panicking horse against a fixed point.

Which lead rope suits travel?

For travel, a shorter and softer lead rope is usually preferred - easier to coil and store, less to tangle in the box. The Equijump Ltd Leadrope and Lami-Cell elastic lead are both practical for travel use. The Goleygo system is also useful in travel since the adapter pin stays on the headcollar and you can swap the lead between horses easily.

How do I clean a rope lead rope?

Cotton and synthetic rope leads can be machine-washed on a cool cycle with a mild detergent. Air-dry, avoid the tumble dryer. Leather sections wipe clean with a damp cloth and condition occasionally. The Goleygo lead and adapter pins clean with soap and water.
