Bib Martingales

A bib martingale is a martingale variant with a triangular leather panel (the "bib") that fills the space between the running martingale forks. The bib prevents the reins from being thrown over the horse's head during a fall - particularly important in cross-country and racing where a rider coming off can leave reins dangerously loose.

Use a bib martingale for cross-country, racing, and any high-speed work where rein-throw risk is real. Some show jumping classes also use bibs by default. The bib doesn't change the martingale's effect on the horse - it only adds the rein-management safety feature.

Standard martingale sizing applies - pony, cob, full. The bib should sit just behind the noseband, allowing the reins to run freely along it without restricting head movement.

Wipe down after each ride. Clean weekly with mild saddle soap and condition sparingly. Inspect the bib stitching regularly - this is the load-bearing area in a fall scenario.
