Full Cheek Bit

A full cheek snaffle has long vertical extensions above and below the mouthpiece - the "cheeks" - which provide strong lateral guidance against the horse's face when one rein is taken. Full cheeks are the traditional pattern for young horses learning to turn off the rein, and for dressage starters where lateral influence matters.

A full cheek suits young horses learning to respond to lateral rein cues, horses that need more turning support, or dressage horses early in their training. It's also common in driving. Most horses move on to a D-ring or loose ring once they're confident with rein turning.

Measure mouth width at the corners and pick a bit that sits with about 5mm clear on each side. Full cheek extensions sit against the face above and below the mouthpiece - the bit should fit so the cheeks contact the face flat, not at an angle. Most full cheeks come with bit keepers (small leather loops on the bridle) to prevent the cheeks rotating forward.

A D-ring uses just the flat side of a D against the cheek for lateral guidance - milder, cleaner-looking. A full cheek uses long vertical extensions for stronger lateral pressure - more support for a young or learning horse but bulkier and more visible on the face.

Rinse in warm water after every ride. Stainless steel needs nothing more; sweet iron's patina is intentional; synthetic mouthpieces clean with a soft brush.
