Frequently Asked Questions

What are full-length reins?

Full-length reins are reins sized for full-size adult horses (15.2hh and above), as opposed to pony or cob lengths. Full reins are typically 130cm-150cm long, sized to give comfortable contact with the bit at a normal riding position without pulling tight or hanging slack.

When should I use full-length reins?

Use full-length reins on full-size horses. For ponies (12hh-14.2hh), pony-length reins are shorter; for cobs (14.2hh-15.2hh), cob-length is in between.

What full-length rein brands do you stock?

CWD covers the broadest range - rubber (with and without stoppers), leather (loop, contact, hunter), web (loop, contact). Dyon covers half-rubber and full-rubber rein patterns. Butet makes rubber reins in 13mm width.

How do I choose between leather, rubber and web reins?

Rubber gives the strongest grip in wet weather and on a strong horse. Web is lighter in the hand and suits dressage and flatwork. Leather is the classic choice and gives the most direct feel between horse and rider. Plaited leather/rubber combinations (Dyon's pattern with leather loops and rubber finish) give grip reference for hand position.

How do I care for full-length leather reins?

Wipe leather after every ride. Clean weekly with mild saddle soap and condition sparingly with a quality leather balm. Rubber reins benefit from an occasional warm wash to remove built-up sweat. Web reins can be hand-washed when needed.
