Frequently Asked Questions

What pony bits do you stock?

We carry Trust Equestrian pony-specific sweet iron bits across the main cheek patterns: loose ring, full cheek, hanging cheek, Pelham and 3-ring. All use Trust's sweet iron mouthpiece, which develops a natural surface oxidation that encourages chewing and salivation - particularly useful in a young or developing pony's mouth.

How do I choose the right pony bit mouthpiece?

For everyday work and young ponies, a sweet iron loose ring or eggbutt snaffle is the most common starting point. Hanging cheek (or "Beval") adds light poll pressure for ponies that lean. Pelham gives more control for stronger ponies. Tell us your pony's current bit and what you're working on and we'll shortlist.

How do I size a bit for a pony?

Measure mouth width at the corners and pick a bit that sits with about 5mm clear on each side. Pony mouths typically take 11.5cm-12.5cm bits, depending on breed. The Trust pony-specific range is sized for the smaller mouth from the start.

What is the difference between pony and full-size bits?

Pony bits are narrower (smaller mouthpiece width) and often have proportionally smaller cheek pieces and rings. The action and feel are the same as full-size bits - the difference is purely scale. Most adult horses won't fit a pony bit; cob-sized horses sometimes can but check the chart.

Which brands do you carry for pony bits?

Trust Equestrian for the pony-specific sweet iron range. For other pony-suitable bits in our wider stock, see the bits collection - Poponcini's Baby Pelham and Trust's Inno Sense Baby Pelham and Baby Weymouth also fit pony mouths.

Can pony bits be used for cob-sized horses?

Sometimes. A cob with a smaller mouth may take a pony bit at the larger end (12.5cm), but a full-size cob bit (13cm-13.5cm) usually fits better. Measure first; if you're between sizes, contact us and we'll advise.
