About Nathe bits

Nathe bits are designed for sensitive mouths: a smooth, mouth-friendly thermoplastic that many horses accept quickly, paired with well-balanced cheeks for quiet, even contact.

Why riders choose Nathe

The temperature-neutral, hypoallergenic mouthpiece helps encourage relaxed chewing and steady salivation. Clear aids without the “rubber eraser” feel make Nathe a favourite for green, sensitive or retraining horses.

Mouthpieces & feel

Our focused selection covers the key profiles you’ll actually use: straight (Mullen) bars for even pressure, tongue-relief ports for horses that press, and jointed options for a livelier connection. Choose the mildest shape that keeps responses consistent.

Cheeks that suit everyday work

We stock popular cheeks for schooling and the ring—such as loose ring and eggbutt—plus select options for extra stability or guidance. Pick the cheek that matches your steering needs and your horse’s way of going.

Fit & sizing

Measure width between the inside edges of the rings/cheeks and allow a little clearance at the lips. Match thickness and flexibility to mouth conformation so the bit sits quietly without crowding a low palate or fleshy tongue.

Care & inspection

Rinse after riding and clean gently with mild soap; avoid abrasives and high heat. Check for tooth marks or surface damage and replace the bit if the mouthpiece is compromised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nathe known for?

Nathe is a German bit specialist owned by Sprenger, focused on flexible synthetic bits for sensitive horses. Nathe bits use a thermoplastic mouthpiece material that warms quickly to body temperature, flexes with the horse's mouth, and offers a softer feel than stainless steel without sacrificing the precision of a metal cheek and rein attachment. The signature is the flexible mullen mouth, available across snaffle, Pelham, gag and 3-ring patterns.

What Nathe products do you stock?

We carry Nathe bits across the loose ring, D-ring and full cheek snaffle patterns, the Pelham (flexible and hard mullen mouth, with port options), the gag Pelham, the 3-ring with sliding cheek, the tandem snaffle, and the RNF specialty bit. Mouthpiece thickness runs 15mm and 20mm depending on the pattern.

Are you an authorised Nathe stockist in Ireland?

Yes. As Nathe is owned by Sprenger and we are an authorised Sprenger stockist in Ireland, we carry the Nathe range with full manufacturer warranty cover.

How do I choose the right Nathe bit for my horse?

Nathe is the right starting point if your horse rejects metal contact, salivates poorly, or has a sensitive mouth that tightens against a stainless bit. The flexible mullen mouth is the most common choice for everyday work. The hard mullen mouth with port (Pelham options) gives more tongue clearance and a slightly firmer contact for horses that need it. Tell us your horse's mouth width and the issue you're working on and we'll shortlist appropriate Nathe options.

How do I care for Nathe bits?

Rinse the bit in warm water after each ride to clear saliva and feed. The thermoplastic mouthpiece can be cleaned with a soft brush if needed; avoid abrasive scourers as they damage the surface. Check for wear marks regularly - the mouthpiece is hard-wearing but not indestructible, and should be replaced if you see deep splits or chunks missing.

Where are Nathe bits made?

Nathe is designed by Sprenger in Iserlohn, Germany, and most of the Nathe range we stock is German-made alongside Sprenger's own KK Ultra and Dynamic RS lines. A small number of Nathe bits are produced at partner facilities outside Germany. If country of origin matters for a specific Nathe bit, ask us before you order and we'll check.
