Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What tack care products do you stock?

We carry the CWD leather care range (Soap, Conditioner and Saddle Cleaning Kit), the Butet Akene line (Soap, Cream, Oil and Oil Brush), Kentucky Horsewear Tack Cleaner and Trust Equestrian Trust Care Wax. Each line is formulated for the leathers used in that brand's tack and is the safe choice for products from that brand.

How often should I clean and condition my leather tack?

Wipe tack down with a damp cloth after every ride to clear sweat and dirt. Clean with a mild saddle soap (CWD Soap, Butet Akene Soap, Kentucky Tack Cleaner) once a week in regular use, or every 2-3 rides in heavier use. Condition with a quality balm (CWD Conditioner, Butet Akene Cream) once a month or when the leather feels dry to the touch. Avoid the temptation to over-condition - heavy treatment softens the leather more than it should.

What is the difference between saddle soap, glycerine and balm?

Saddle soap is the everyday cleaner - removes sweat and dirt, leaves the leather slightly conditioned. Glycerine soap is a particular type of saddle soap (CWD Soap is glycerine-based) that's gentler and leaves a slight protective film. Conditioner or balm (CWD Conditioner, Butet Akene Cream) replaces moisture and oils that leather loses with use - apply sparingly and buff off excess. Oil (Butet Akene Oil) goes deeper and softens the leather more aggressively - use only on leather that genuinely needs it; over-oiling makes leather limp.

Can I over-condition leather?

Yes. Quality leather - especially calfskin - softens with use, and heavy conditioning can leave it limp, slippery and over-soft. Apply a thin even coat of conditioner, work it in with a soft cloth, then buff off the excess. If the leather still feels dry after a normal application, do a second light coat rather than a heavy single coat. Calfskin in particular doesn't want heavy oiling.

Which products are recommended for calfskin?

The CWD Conditioner and the Butet Akene Cream are both formulated for the calfskin leathers used in their respective saddles and are the safest choices. Avoid heavy oils on calfskin - a balm-based conditioner gives softening without making the leather over-soft. The Kentucky Tack Cleaner is fine on most leathers but Butet Akene or CWD products are matched specifically to calfskin.

How should I store tack to keep it in good condition?

Store saddles on supportive racks at room temperature, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources (radiators, dehumidifiers, windowsills). Use a breathable saddle cover to keep dust off but allow air to circulate - don't wrap a saddle in plastic. Bridles store unbuckled on a bridle rack in a cool, dry place. In humid storage, an occasional check for mould or mildew is worth the time.
