About Sprenger

Sprenger is a leader in innovative, horse-friendly bits that balance precise communication with comfort. From everyday snaffles to specialist designs, their anatomically-shaped mouthpieces help riders develop a steadier, more confident contact.

Why riders choose Sprenger bits

Signature technologies such as KK Ultra (with a 45° angled centre lozenge), Dynamic RS (ergonomic shaping) and novocontact (oval, tongue-friendly surface) are engineered to sit correctly in the mouth and deliver clear, gentle aids—ideal for training and competition.

Materials that support acceptance

Sensogan (Sprenger’s copper-based alloy) is designed to encourage salivation and bit acceptance, while classic stainless steel offers a familiar, crisp feel. Sensogan’s composition also reduces tarnishing compared with older copper alloys, helping day-to-day care.

Choosing your cheek and mouthpiece

Loose ring offers mobility and a livelier feel; eggbutt or D-ring add stability at the lips; full cheek improves lateral guidance. For stronger horses, Pelham, universal or gag styles introduce measured leverage—always matched to educated hands and your discipline’s rules.

Fit and thickness

Measure width between the inside edges of the rings/cheeks, allowing slight clearance at the lips. Match thickness to your horse’s mouth conformation: thinner profiles can suit smaller mouths or low palates; moderate thickness often feels milder provided the bit sits quietly.

Care and maintenance

Rinse after each ride, deep-clean periodically (especially around joints) and gently clean any covered or synthetic surfaces. Copper-rich alloys may darken over time—polish as needed—while stainless steel simply wipes clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sprenger known for?

Herm. Sprenger is a German metalwork specialist making bits and spurs in Iserlohn since 1872. The brand is known for the KK Ultra, Dynamic RS, Turnado and Novocontact bit ranges, the use of proprietary alloys (Aurigan and Sensogan) that encourage acceptance through taste and warmth, and consistently high standards of finish on stainless steel work. Sprenger bits and spurs are widely used at international level in dressage, jumping and eventing.

What Sprenger products do you stock?

We carry Sprenger bits across the KK Ultra, Dynamic RS, Turnado, Novocontact and Max-Control families in stainless steel, Aurigan and Sensogan, plus Sprenger spurs (currently sitting alongside other specialist patterns in our specialised bits collection) including the Ultra Fit range with the Balkenhol fastening developed in cooperation with Klaus Balkenhol. Mouthpieces, sizes and shank lengths can usually be ordered to a specific spec if not in stock.

Are you an authorised Sprenger stockist in Ireland?

Yes. Equijump Ltd. is an authorised Sprenger stockist and has carried the range for years. All bits and spurs come direct from Sprenger with full warranty cover.

How do I choose the right Sprenger product for my horse?

For a bit, the variables are mouthpiece shape (single-jointed, double-jointed, ported), material (stainless, Aurigan, Sensogan), and ring or shank style (loose ring, eggbutt, D-ring, full cheek, hanging cheek). Tell us your horse's mouth width, current bit, and any contact issues you're working on, and we'll shortlist appropriate models. For spurs, fit, length and shank type depend on your boot and discipline.

How do I care for Sprenger products?

Rinse bits in warm water after every ride to clear saliva and feed, then dry before hanging up. Stainless steel needs nothing more. Aurigan and Sensogan develop a slight surface patina with use - this is intended and shouldn't be polished off, as it contributes to the taste and warmth that makes those alloys what they are. Spurs need an occasional wipe-down to clear sweat from the shank.

Where are Sprenger products made?

Sprenger is designed and headquartered in Iserlohn, Germany, where the company has been family-owned and operated since 1872. The proprietary Aurigan and Sensogan alloy work and most of the core range are German-made, with parts of the wider catalogue produced through Sprenger's international partner network. If country of origin matters for a specific Sprenger item, ask us before you order and we'll check.
