About Sprenger horse bits

Sprenger leads in anatomically shaped bits that balance clear, precise aids with comfort, helping horses accept a soft, steady contact in daily schooling and in the ring.

Why riders choose Sprenger

Signature designs like KK Ultra, Dynamic RS and novocontact are engineered to sit correctly between tongue and palate, supporting even pressure and clear communication for sensitive or green horses as well as seasoned competitors.

Key technologies: KK Ultra, Dynamic RS, novocontact

KK Ultra uses a centre lozenge angled at 45° for precise, palate-friendly feel; Dynamic RS adds an ergonomic curve for an even pressure spread; novocontact features an oval surface that widens tongue contact for a soft yet clear influence.

Materials: Sensogan and stainless steel

Sensogan—Sprenger’s copper-based alloy—promotes salivation and bit acceptance with easier care than older copper alloys; classic stainless steel provides a crisp, familiar feel and long-term durability.

Choosing cheeks and mouthpieces

Loose ring offers mobility and a livelier feel; eggbutt or D-ring add stability at the lips; full cheek improves lateral guidance. For stronger horses, Pelham, universal or gag styles introduce measured leverage—always matched to educated hands and your discipline’s rules.

Fit and thickness

Measure width between the inside edges of the rings/cheeks with slight clearance at the lips. Match thickness to mouth conformation: thinner profiles can suit small mouths or low palates; moderate thickness often feels milder if the bit sits quietly.

Care and maintenance

Rinse after each ride and periodically deep-clean around joints. Copper-rich alloys may darken—polish as needed—while stainless steel wipes clean quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What Sprenger bits do you stock?

We carry the Sprenger bit range across the KK family (KK Ultra, KK Correction), the Multi Joint Sensogan, the Loose Ring 4 Rings pattern, eggbutts in hard carbon and other materials, the Flex Control flexible mullen mouth line, the Linda Tellington Jones Bit, the Max-Control with locking mechanism, rubber mullen mouth Pelhams, and the Sheepskin Hackamore. Stainless steel, Aurigan and Sensogan alloys are available across most patterns.

Are you an authorised Sprenger dealer in Ireland?

Yes. Equijump Ltd. is an authorised Sprenger stockist in Ireland. Bits ship direct from Sprenger with full manufacturer warranty.

How do I choose the right Sprenger bit for my horse?

The KK Ultra and Multi Joint Sensogan are everyday workhorses - the KK family's anatomic shape and the Sensogan alloy give a soft, accepted contact for most horses. The Linda Tellington Jones Bit with copper roller is a useful introduction for fussy horses. The KK Correction has more bend angle for horses that lean. The Max-Control with locking mechanism gives more brakes for strong horses. The Flex Control and Rubber Pelhams suit horses that need a softer feel. Tell us your horse and we'll shortlist.

How do I size a Sprenger bit?

Measure the width of your horse's mouth at the corners and pick a bit that sits with about 5mm clear on each side. Sprenger bits come in 1cm increments. Mouthpiece thickness ranges from 13mm (Linda Tellington Jones) up to 20mm (Loose Ring 4 Rings) - thinner mouthpieces are more direct, thicker ones spread pressure over a larger area.

How should I care for a Sprenger bit?

Rinse the bit in warm water after every ride to clear saliva and feed. Stainless steel needs nothing more. Aurigan and Sensogan develop a slight surface patina with use - intended, contributes to the taste and warmth of those alloys, don't polish off. Rubber-covered bits should be inspected regularly and replaced before the rubber splits.

What is the difference between Aurigan, Sensogan and stainless steel?

All three are full Sprenger quality. Stainless steel is the everyday standard - hard-wearing, no taste. Aurigan is a copper-zinc-manganese alloy that warms quickly and encourages salivation; horses that reject stainless often accept Aurigan. Sensogan is Sprenger's newer alloy with added manganese, giving an even more pronounced encouraging effect on chewing and acceptance. Sensogan is typically the priciest, Aurigan the middle, stainless the entry.

Where are Sprenger bits made?

The core Sprenger bit ranges (KK Ultra, KK Correction, Multi Joint Sensogan, Eggbutt Hard Carbon, Flex Control, Loose Ring 4 Rings, Sheepskin Hackamore) are German-made in Iserlohn. A smaller part of the broader Sprenger range is produced at partner facilities in Vietnam, Pakistan and elsewhere - in our current stock that includes the Linda Tellington Jones Bit, the Rubber Pelhams and the Max-Control. If country of origin matters for a specific Sprenger bit, ask us before you order.
