Materials and mouthfeel

Cyprium-90 encourages salivation and relaxation, while Flexi mouthpieces use a soft, warm-to-the-touch synthetic over a steel core for a kinder feel. Traditional stainless steel offers crisp feedback and long-term durability, ideal when you want direct, consistent communication.

Cheek styles and steering

Choose loose ring for mobility and a livelier feel, eggbutt or D-ring for stability at the corners of the lips, and full cheek for added lateral guidance. For stronger horses, Pelham, gag or elevator styles introduce measured leverage—always matched to educated hands and your discipline’s rules.

Width, thickness and fit

Measure width straight across the mouth between the inside edges of the cheeks/rings, allowing a small clearance at the lips. Match thickness to mouth conformation: thinner profiles can suit small mouths or low palates; moderate thickness often feels milder provided the bit fits comfortably and sits quiet in the mouth.

How do I size a Metalab bit?

Measure the width of your horse's mouth at the corners and pick a bit that sits with about 5mm clear on each side. Metalab bits come in 1cm increments from pony through to oversize. Mouthpiece thickness is a separate variable - thinner mouthpieces are more direct, thicker ones spread pressure over a larger area.
How should I care for a Metalab bit?

Rinse in warm water after every ride to clear saliva and feed. Stainless steel needs nothing more. Cyprium develops a slight surface patina with use - intended, don't polish off. Rubber-covered bits should be inspected regularly for splits and replaced before the rubber fails.
What is the difference between Cyprium and stainless steel Metalab bits?

Cyprium is Metalab's copper-rich alloy designed to encourage salivation and acceptance through taste and warmth. It's softer to the touch than stainless and develops a patina with use. Cyprium bits are usually German-made (Origin-DE) in our stock; the stainless steel range is mostly Vietnamese manufacture. Both are full Metalab quality.

Metalab is part of the Lami-Cell group. The bits we stock come primarily from Vietnam (mid-range stainless), Germany (the Cyprium copper-rich range and Pelham Elite line), and a smaller selection from China (flexi/synthetic mouthpieces).
