Frequently Asked Questions

What is a safety stirrup?

A safety stirrup is an English stirrup designed to release the rider's foot in a fall, reducing the risk of being dragged. Safety mechanisms vary: some stirrups have a flexible side branch that opens under sudden pressure, others use a magnetic or breakaway side, others have an angled tread that helps the foot slide free. The goal is the same - prevent foot entrapment.

When should I use a safety stirrup?

Safety stirrups are particularly recommended for children, novice riders, riders returning to riding after a fall, and riders working with green or unpredictable horses. Many adult competition riders now also use safety stirrups by default.

What safety stirrup brands do you stock?

Acavallo REL-X EASY and REL-X 180 - both modern safety designs with angled tread and flex features. Tech Stirrups Rome Racing - Italian safety stirrup design.

How do I size a safety stirrup?

Standard adult stirrups are 4.75" (12cm) wide. The fit should leave 1cm of space either side of your boot. Safety stirrup mechanisms work best when correctly sized - confirm the fit before relying on the safety feature.

How do I care for a safety stirrup?

Wipe down after each ride. Test the safety mechanism periodically (most safety stirrups should release with firm sideways pressure). Replace any stirrup where the safety mechanism isn't functioning correctly.

Do safety stirrups affect ridden performance?

Modern safety stirrups (REL-X, Tech Stirrups) have ride and feel similar to traditional non-safety irons - the safety feature only activates under genuine sideways pressure. For everyday riding, you won't notice the difference.
