A Theault horsebox in the Normandy countryside.
Ponts, Normandy since 1929

Nearly a century of building horse boxes, one at a time.

A family company on the Cotentin peninsula has been building horseboxes since the 1920s. Equijump has been their Irish distributor since 2011.

Theault is a family-run Normandy manufacturer, founded in 1929 and still privately held. Every horse box is drawn in their own design office in Ponts, then built in their workshop on the same site. Aluminium-panelled body, profiled luton, insulated loading ramp, all assembled by hand around a Renault, Mercedes, or Peugeot chassis. A finished horse box takes months, not weeks.

The five models on this page cover the practical span of equestrian transport in Ireland: a 3.5T XTEO that anyone with a B licence can drive, an Aero Sprinter or Aero Master for the rider doing the European circuit, and the Endurance and Elegance for stables moving four to twelve horses with apartment quarters above. Every one is built to order.

Equijump have been Theault's Irish distributor since 2011. We translate the French spec sheet, advise on chassis and licence, manage the build through to delivery at your yard, and stand behind the horse box afterwards.

The interior of a Theault Aero Master configured with the Switch system.

The Switch© system.

One horse area, three configurations. The Switch system in the Aero range lets the partitioning, ramp position, and tack room fold and reset between sport, race, and leisure layouts. You can move a one-horse rear-facing setup to a two-horse herringbone in the time it takes to clean the floor. It's a Theault patent and the reason most professional yards on the Aero Sprinter or Aero Master will not consider a competitor build.

Irish yards on the road

What riders say after a few seasons.

We have been buying Theault Horseboxes since 2006. They are exceptionally well built and designed with horses in mind. Horses travel really well in them. They're so much safer than a jeep and trailer, as you can monitor exactly how your horse is travelling at all times.

Ballinroe Horse Transport

The Theault has honestly made a massive difference to how we manage and move the horses. What I love is that you can drive it on a car licence, so anyone on the team can take it out. Having the lads just up the road means servicing is dead handy too. The horses are always safe and settled in it, you couldn't ask for more.

Ballypatrick · GBBS International

The main thing for me is that it just looks super smart, and I can drive it on a car licence. I went for the five-seater, so it's really family-friendly. The horses travel so safely in it, especially with the stallion partitions. With Reece and the team just down the road, it really was a no-brainer for me.

Common questions

Before you call.

The questions Reece is asked most often about Theault horse boxes. If yours isn't here, send a note below or pick up the phone.

What licence do I need to drive a Theault horsebox in Ireland?

A standard Category B Irish driving licence covers the XTEO and both Aero models (Sprinter and Master) at their 3.5-tonne configurations. For the Endurance and Elegance, both built on HGV chassis, you need a full Category C licence. We'll confirm the loaded weight and licence requirement for any specific Theault model before you order.

Can I drive a 3.5-tonne horsebox without an HGV licence in Ireland?

Yes. A Category B (car) licence covers any vehicle up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass, which includes most modern two-horse boxes such as the Theault XTEO and the 3.5-tonne Aero models. For a 5-tonne or 7.5-tonne lorry you need a Category C1 licence, and for anything above 7.5 tonnes a full Category C licence is required.

What size Theault horsebox should I choose?

A 3.5-tonne Theault comfortably carries up to two horses in the 16.2hh-17.2hh range with room for tack and feed. For three or more horses, larger animals, or a vehicle with overnight living quarters, look at the 5-tonne or 7.5-tonne range. The deciding factor is usually total loaded weight, not just floor space - the horses, tack, water, fuel and any passengers all count against the 3,500kg limit on a category B licence.

How much does a horsebox weigh?

A standard 3.5-tonne horsebox has an unladen weight of roughly 2,400kg to 2,800kg, depending on the build and finish. That leaves a usable payload of about 700kg to 1,000kg for your horses, tack, water, fuel and passengers. Staying under the plated weight matters: overloading is both illegal and unsafe, so it is worth weighing a loaded box at a public weighbridge if you are close to the limit.

How long can a horse safely travel in a horsebox?

Irish and EU animal-transport guidelines advise that horses should not travel more than 8 hours without a proper rest. On journeys over 4 hours, stop to offer water and check on each horse. Fit competition horses cope with longer days, but a break every 3 to 4 hours for hydration, ventilation and a chance to rest the legs keeps them travelling well.

What safety features come standard on a Theault horsebox?

Every Theault is built with stallion-grade partitions, anti-slip rubber flooring, ventilation windows and a reinforced bulkhead between the cab and the horse area. Crash-testing and C-Tech certification cover the full structure. Internal and reversing cameras, LED lighting, emergency exits and insulated panels are standard or optional depending on the model. We can walk you through the specification of any specific build before you commit.

What is the benefit of a separate tack and changing area in a horsebox?

A dedicated tack and changing area keeps saddles, bridles and rugs stored securely and out of the horse area, so the box stays clean. It also gives you shelter and a place to change at shows, which is no small thing in Irish weather. Larger Theault models can add bench seating, coat hooks, saddle racks and a vanity unit in this space.

How can I finance a Theault horsebox?

Equijump Ltd. partners with Finance Ireland for Theault purchases, and in some cases no deposit is required. Hire purchase agreements are typical, with terms running from 12 to 60 months. We'll help you weigh up finance against outright purchase based on the residual value of the model you choose.

What warranty and aftercare does Theault provide?

Every Theault horsebox comes with a 3-year manufacturer bodywork warranty, with the option to extend to 5 years. The chassis carries the relevant manufacturer warranty depending on the platform - Peugeot, Mercedes-Benz or Renault - and the chassis maker's roadside recovery programme covers you across Europe. Servicing and repairs are handled through the relevant chassis dealer network across the EU and Ireland; Equijump Ltd. coordinates Theault warranty claims locally so you're not chasing France for paperwork.

What is Theault?

Theault is a French horsebox manufacturer based in Normandy, building purpose-designed horse transport on Peugeot, Mercedes-Benz and Renault chassis. The range covers 3.5-tonne single and double-stall boxes through to 7.5-tonne lorries with full living and tack areas. Theault vehicles are crash-tested and certified by C-Tech, and they're the choice of many top-level competition yards across Europe.
