Which mouthpiece for a fussy horse?

If your horse fusses, chomps or leans, the mouthpiece is usually the place to start, not the cheek. Trust built the Inno Sense line around a flexible synthetic mouthpiece that many sensitive horses accept more readily than fixed metal, and because it comes in eggbutt, dee, baby pelham, kimblewick and hackamore combi versions, you can change the mouthpiece conversation without changing the leverage your horse already understands. The Sweet Iron range takes the opposite route: a metal that oxidizes to encourage salivation and a soft mouth.

Depth, not filler

More than a hundred bits are live for US delivery. That depth means the odd sizes and the in-between options are actually here: the specific cheek-and-mouthpiece combination your trainer suggested rather than the nearest thing to it. Ordering bits from the US, and one honest caveat

Bits ship from Ireland by DHL Express, typically 3 to 5 business days to your barn, and most fall in the lightest shipping bracket. US import duty is prepaid at checkout; nothing is collected on delivery. The caveat: a mouthpiece is a hygiene-sensitive item, so a bit cannot be returned once opened. Check sizing carefully before ordering; if you are between sizes, run the measurement past info@equijumpltd.com first. Unopened bits in original condition return within 30 days as normal.

How do I choose the right bit for my horse?

Start with mouthpiece (single-jointed, double-jointed, mullen, ported), material (stainless, sweet iron, leather, flexible synthetic), and cheek pattern (loose ring, eggbutt, D-ring, full cheek, hanging cheek, Pelham, gag). Most horses do well in a snaffle in their preferred material. Move to a Pelham or gag only if you genuinely need more brakes than a snaffle offers. What is the difference between Inno Sense, sweet iron and leather Trust bits?

All three are full Trust Equestrian bit lines from the Netherlands and they target different responses. Inno Sense uses a flexible FDA-approved synthetic mouthpiece around a stainless steel core - warmer and softer than metal, used for sensitive horses and young horses. Sweet iron develops a natural rust-like patina that encourages chewing and salivation through taste - don't polish the patina off. Leather wraps a stainless core in saddlery leather for the gentlest possible mouthpiece - typically used for horses returning to work after lay-off or in contact retraining.
How do I size a bit correctly?

Measure the width of your horse's mouth at the corners using a piece of string or a dedicated bit-measure tool. Pick a bit that sits with about 5mm clear on each side - not pinching the corners, not loose enough to slide. Most bits come in 1cm increments. Mouthpiece thickness is a separate variable: thinner mouthpieces (10mm-14mm) feel more direct, thicker ones (16mm-20mm) spread pressure over a larger area.

How should I clean and care for a bit?

Rinse in warm water after every ride to clear saliva and feed. Stainless steel needs nothing more. Sweet iron should be rinsed but not polished - the patina is intentional. Synthetic mouthpieces (Inno Sense, Nathe) clean with a soft brush; avoid abrasive scourers. Leather mouthpieces should be dried thoroughly before hanging up and conditioned occasionally with a leather balm. Inspect rings, joints and mouthpieces regularly for wear.
